TWC’s Annual Volunteer Day

Another year has passed, and with that, another successful day of volunteering in Colorado. We were fortunate to have a cool, overcast morning where we spent a few hours harvesting vegetables at Earth’s Table, a local garden in Boulder. Earth’s Table is a non-profit organization located in Boulder & Broomfield Counties, donating 100% of the produce harvested to people in need.

The garden produces an assortment of vegetables, ranging from squash to beets, onions to cucumbers, and more.

Earth’s Table began in 1999, and with a community of volunteers, they’ve established five working gardens in Boulder County. Their yield this past year was over eight tons of fresh garden produce. We enjoyed our time with Michele at Earth’s Table, and were ecstatic to discover that we harvested about 278 lbs. of vegetables that morning!

Wonderfully, Earth’s Table works with Community Food Share – where we spent our afternoon packing and repacking vegetables from many local gardens and donors. This is our third-year volunteering with CFS, and it was another beautiful success. In case you are unaware of CFS, here’s some background information:

“Community Food Share was created as a non-profit organization in 1981, receiving a seed grant from what is now Foothills United Way, and became an affiliate of America’s Second Harvest (now called Feeding America). Originally operating under the umbrella of Food Bank of the Rockies, Community Food Share began operations in a space at EFAA’s ECHO House Emergency Shelter. Kathy Coyne was hired as the sole staff member of this new organization. Shortly thereafter, the City of Boulder offered space, for only $1 a year, in a city-owned building on 13th Street. Immediately, Community Food Share began collecting and distributing food to 18 human service agencies in Boulder County.”

Take a look at how we spent our afternoon with CFS:

It was another fun experience for us at TWC this summer. We are already looking forward to returning next year to harvest crops with Earth’s Table and package them up with Community Food Share.
